Overview
Summer 2026 Overnight Camp Management Staff for YMCA Camp Independence in Fox Lake, Illinois. The camp offers one‑week residential sessions during the summer and weekend retreats in the winter. Staff will help create a safe, engaging environment for campers and support staff development.

- Plan and implement recreational activities such as arts and crafts, fishing, song festivals, swimming, nature hikes, archery, boating, and adventure events.
- Collaborate with the Program Director and staff to create weekly programs for campers of all ages.
- Assist with daily camp schedule operations and supervise assigned program areas.
- Coach and mentor camp counselors, ensuring positive experiences for youth and families.
- Enforce facility rules and regulations, maintain discipline and safety, and intervene when necessary.
- Maintain cleanliness and safety of camp facilities, adhering to YMCA and American Camping Association standards.
- Serve as a positive role model, embodying the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Conduct safety checks, equipment setups, and mid‑summer or end‑summer counselor evaluations.
- Address staff management issues promptly and act with integrity.
- 21 years of age or older at the start of camp.
- Commitment to working with diverse youth.
- Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to present ideas clearly to various audiences.
- Passion for outdoorsy activities and a willingness to work hard.
- Experience in camping, childcare, education, recreation, or sports (plus not required).
- Physical and mental ability to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (within the past year).
- Current certification for assigned program area by the camp’s vendor or equivalent.
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to the YMCA mission.
- Report any hazards to your supervisor.
- Follow all policies related to child safety and supervision.
- Report suspicious behavior and policy violations.
- Complete all required child abuse prevention training.
