Qualifications: Appropriate ISBE License, Speech Endorsement (incl. Middle School as needed)
Purpose: To provide sound educational programs for children who cannot sufficiently benefit from regular classroom instruction as a result of disability, as defined by special education criteria.
Essential Functions and Performance Responsibilities:
- Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communications and speech improvement.
- Provides a therapeutic program to meet individual needs of students with speech and language disabilities.
- Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments.
- Provides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, fluency, and language impairments.
- Provides screening to identify children with speech and language disabilities.
- Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate.
- Develops and implements Individual Educational Plans for students who qualify for services.
- Collaborates regularly with classroom teachers and other school staff to implement therapy by suggesting strategies for the student’s daily activities.
- Provides information, support, and counsel to parents and families when appropriate.
- Provides inservice education to teachers and school staff on topics concerning speech and language.
- Keeps thorough and ongoing records for all students receiving therapy, and provides copies of all required paperwork to the Special Education Department.
- At the beginning of each school year, provides screening for all students in 2nd grade.
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Attends staff meetings and serves on committees as required.
- Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by an administrator.
