Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Automotive Technician
Completion of high school or equivalent, and two years experience in the field of automotive mechanics, of which one year of experience must have been in diesel mechanics; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience. Applicants within six months of meeting the education/experience requirement may be considered for trainee status.
Must possess a valid State of Florida Driver's license by date of employment and obtain a State of Florida Class A Commercial Driver's license with an X endorsement within six months of employment and a Motor Vehicle Record that meets the requirements of Alachua County policy #6-7;
Motor Vehicle Records will be reviewed prior to employment. If, in the past 24-month period, the applicants Motor Vehicle Record has more than three (3) moving traffic infractions or three (3) or more at fault motor vehicle accidents (or combination of both and /or a conviction/pending charge for driving under the influence) or is in violation of any standard mandated by Federal or State Law or Regulation, the minimum qualifications are not met for the position.
Must possess Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS) certification on air conditioning repair and recycling within three months of the date of employment.
Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen & physical examination and successful completion of all applicable background checks pre-hire and ongoing are required.
This is a skilled mechanical and technical position in the Department of Public Works, Office of Fleet Management.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSThis is an emergency essential classification. Upon declaration of a disaster and/or emergency, all employees in this classification are required to work.

- Diagnoses, repairs, and rebuilds components of fire and rescue vehicles and apparatus, automotive, light, medium and heavy trucks, trailers, road construction light and heavy equipment, waste management heavy equipment and plant equipment.
- Performs preventative maintenance as required on all vehicles and equipment.
- Performs field service work as required, utilizing field service trucks and equipment.
- Uses all shop equipment such as brake lathe, valve machine, metal lathe, welder, oxygen/acetylene torch, electronic engine control diagnostic equipment, charging system analyzer, metal break and shear, and assorted power and hand tools.
- Preforms metal fabrication and repairs as needed.
- Performs minor body work and painting as needed.
- Assists Fleet Maintenance Supervisor with the training of Fleet Management personnel and other areas as needed.
- Prepares records and reports on work accomplished.
- Drives a County and/or personal vehicle to perform required duties.
- Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and equipment used in automotive, truck and heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of automotive, truck and heavy equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for vehicle maintenance and repair.
- Highly skilled in maintaining, diagnosing, repairing and rebuilding a wide variety of autos, light and heavy trucks and construction equipment.
- Highly skilled in the use of tools, machines and testing instruments of the trade.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, as well as to communicate in writing.
