Job Purpose

To manage a portfolio of clients and oversee the delivery of high-quality accounting, tax, and advisory services within a busy Chartered Accountancy practice. The Accounts Manager will supervise a team of qualified staff, review work, maintain strong client relationships, and support the Partners in developing the firm’s presence across Inverness and the wider Highlands.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies
  • Act as a primary point of contact for clients
  • Review accounts, tax returns, and VAT returns prepared by colleagues
  • Ensure work is completed within deadlines and budgets
  • Identify opportunities for additional services

Accounts & Tax

  • Review and finalise statutory accounts in compliance with UK GAAP and Companies House requirements
  • Review corporation tax computations and self‑assessment returns
  • Oversee VAT compliance including MTD requirements
  • Provide proactive tax and business planning advice
  • Supervise, mentor, and support junior and experienced qualified staff
  • Review working papers and provide constructive feedback
  • Assist with staff training and development
  • Assist with the management of workflow within the team
  • Provide business advisory support including management accounts, forecasting, and cashflow planning
  • Attend client meetings in support of the partners and independently as required

Person Specification

  • Significant experience within a UK accountancy practice
  • Strong technical knowledge of accounts preparation and review
  • Experience reviewing corporation tax and personal tax returns
  • Experience managing a client portfolio
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills
  • Proficient in cloud accounting software (Xero, Quick Books, Sage)
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Experience in business advisory and tax planning
