Overview of the Role

London Transport Museum’s (LTM’s) mission is to ignite curiosity to shape the future. The Museum Library contributes to this broader educational purpose by meeting the information needs of colleagues across the organisation. We also facilitate research visits and answer enquiries from the wider public on diverse topics, such as transport, social history, art, design, and architecture.

We are recruiting for a Library Assistant to support the day‑to‑day running of the LTM Library. This is a hands‑on, varied role focused on keeping the Library operating efficiently and delivering a high‑quality service to both internal teams and external enquirers. You will work collaboratively as part of our small and friendly Library team, helping to ensure the preservation and accessibility of our Library collection.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a library operating in a museum context. The role requires a proactive and organised individual who can manage their own workload, adapt to changing priorities, and contribute to the smooth delivery of library services.

Key Accountabilities
  • Liaise with LTM colleagues and suppliers to purchase new books and materials
  • Manage essential administrative tasks, including LTM subscriptions and financial processes (e.g. invoices, card payments)
  • Regularly check in new resources and process items according to collection guidelines (e.g. labelling, housing, storage)
  • Support journals management, including chasing missing copies and preparing material for binding
  • Handle routine email enquiries, help facilitate research visits, and assist with staff loans and returns
  • Use our Library Management System (Soutron) to assist with cataloguing, record maintenance, and data cleaning
  • Assist with collection management activities – including shelving and reorganisation of resources, stock audits and withdrawals, and basic preservation tasks
  • Take clippings from newspapers/magazines to develop our subject files of press coverage on relevant topics
Skills, Knowledge & Experience Essential
  • Strong customer service skills, with experience in a public‑facing or service‑based role
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent attention to detail and high levels of accuracy
  • Highly organised, with an ability to independently manage and prioritise workloads
  • Experience of libraries either as a staff member, volunteer, or library user
  • Proficient IT skills, including Microsoft Office
  • Experience carrying out administrative tasks
  • Able to work flexibly, proactively, and collaboratively as part of a team
