Job Overview
A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) assessor evaluates people who are completing the NVQ, which is a work‑based qualification awarded in the United Kingdom (UK). The NVQ is awarded at a variety of levels and certifies proficiency in a job or work‑related activity. It can cover more than 1,300 job areas including hospitality, healthcare, fitness, education, horticulture and construction. An NVQ assessor works with the person who is trying to get an NVQ to ensure that they can achieve the necessary goals.
Responsibilities- Work flexible hours, often from home, while also visiting candidates at their place of business to tutor or assess them in their NVQ study.
- Train, support and help students who may study at work, in college or during an internship.
- Make course plans and provide the course content, assisting with the development of the course.
- Create and maintain portfolios for candidates, ensuring that notes and documentation are kept with each record.
- Evaluate students based on portfolios and other work‑related assignments.
- Provide useful feedback so that students can improve or modify their learning based on that feedback.
- Help candidates recognize existing skills and identify areas that need further development.
- Assist candidates in demonstrating their skills and evaluate their competency based on that demonstration.
- Hold an assessor qualification, known as A1 or A2.
- Have experience in the specific area that will be assessed (e.g., management, hospitality, etc.).
NVQs are increasingly common as specialised skills and training become more important in the UK. They are often required by employers and can lead to higher pay and greater opportunities for promotion. Most NVQs take one to two years to complete, with no strict time limit.
