An excellent opportunity has become available for either a dedicated Gardening Couple or two separate roles; a Gardener and Groundsperson to join a beautiful privately owned sporting estate 20 minutes south of Inverness. The Gardener position is full time 5 days per week and the Groundsperson is 4 days / week Monday to Thursday. The Couple will report to the Head Gardener who is based at a different location but visits the Scottish Estate regularly.
The 3.5 acres garden and grounds include walled kitchen garden with a stunning large greenhouse, herbaceous borders surrounding the main residence, walled herbaceous flower garden, a beautiful woodland dell area and extensive lawns. There is a newly build compost bay for making large amounts of organic matter and a newly re-designed late season herbaceous border.
The role would suit an enthusiastic and hardworking couple who are able to use their own initiative, work effectively both together and independently, and take pride in maintaining high standards throughout the estate. A positive attitude and a proactive approach are essential, along with a genuine passion for horticulture and estate maintenance.
The role will involve a wide range of grounds maintenance duties, including pedestrian mowing of lawns as well as managing extensive areas with a ride-on mower. Responsibilities will also include strimming along the main drive and other rough grass areas, lawn edging where required, leaf blowing and collection throughout the autumn and winter months, and snow clearing on the main drive and around the house.
The couple will also be expected to assist with clearing fallen trees when necessary.
It would be advantageous for one of the couple to hold a chainsaw certificate as well as PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates; however, training can be provided if required. Experience in the use and maintenance of garden machinery is highly desirable, including equipment such as an Avant Loader, rotary ride-on mowers, pedestrian mowers, strimmers, and both handheld and backpack leaf blowers.
From September onwards, particular attention must be given to ensuring the gardens are presented at their very best for family shoots and let days. Strong plant knowledge and high horticultural standards are essential, including a solid understanding of plant propagation from seed and plugs. Experience in growing and producing vegetables to a high standard, particularly winter vegetables for the main residence, is important, along with knowledge of producing cut flowers for the household.
Regular division and replanting of herbaceous borders will also form part of the role, requiring careful planning, practical skill, and an eye for detail to maintain the overall aesthetic and productivity of the gardens. Weekend watering duties is part of the role when required and responsibilities can be rotated between both parties.
Accommodation is provided as a 2-3 bed house rent free on the estate, with garden and driveway, council tax included. Bills are the tenant’s responsibility. For the two separate roles, the position could be live in or live out depending on the candidate’s circumstances.
