About Flannery Plant Hire

Flannery Plant Hire is one of the UK's leading providers of operated and self‑drive plant equipment, supporting major infrastructure and construction projects nationwide. We invest in people, technology and innovation to build the workforce of the future.

Role Summary

We are seeking an experienced Class 1 (C+E) HGV Low Loader Driver to join our transport and logistics team. The successful person will safely operate articulated HGVs with lowloader trailers to deliver, collect and position plant and equipment to and from customer sites and depots. This role requires professional vehicle operation, safe vehicle loading/unloading practices, good route planning, and a customer‑focused attitude.

Key Responsibilities
  • Drive Class 1 (C+E) vehicles and lowloader combinations safely and legally on public roads and within customer sites.
  • Load, secure and unload plant, machinery and equipment using appropriate slings, chains, wheel chocks and securing methods in line with company procedures and manufacturer guidance.
  • Perform pre‑start, en‑route and post‑shift vehicle and trailer inspections; complete driver vehicle checklists and report defects or damage promptly.
  • Plan routes to meet delivery schedules, taking into account vehicle dimensions, bridge and weight restrictions, low‑height hazards and site access constraints.
  • Operate ramps, ramps systems and deck adjustments safely; assist with guidance of plant during loading/unloading where required.
  • Work to site rules, customer inductions and method statements; identify hazards and implement controls when working around plant, pedestrians and live traffic.
  • Complete accurate paperwork and electronic records including delivery notes, vehicle defect reports, timesheets and site sign‑in documentation.
  • Communicate professionally with depot staff, site personnel and customers to confirm delivery details, site requirements and any issues affecting transport operations.
  • Carry out basic routine vehicle maintenance checks such as tyre condition, fluid levels and securement equipment condition, and report scheduling needs to the fleet team.
  • Support depot activities during quieter periods, including assisting with vehicle preparation, loading support and yard duties as directed.
Skills and Attributes
  • Proven experience driving Class 1 (C+E) HGVs with lowloader or similar trailer combinations, preferably in plant haulage or construction logistics.
  • Strong understanding of vehicle load securing, weight distribution and safe loading/unloading techniques.
  • Good route planning skills and the ability to assess site access and restrictions prior to travel.
  • High standard of site awareness and commitment to health & safety, including correct use of PPE and adherence to site procedures.
  • Reliable, punctual and able to manage time effectively to meet scheduled collections and deliveries.
  • Good communication skills and a professional customer‑facing manner.
  • Physically capable of securing loads and assisting with manual handling tasks in variable weather conditions.
  • Attention to detail when completing checks, paperwork and on‑site reports.
Qualifications Essential
  • Valid UK Category C+E driving licence with appropriate entitlement and no serious endorsements that would restrict work with our insurance.
  • Valid Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) and digital tachograph card.
  • Proven experience operating lowloader trailers and securing plant for road transport.
  • Good English language skills sufficient for safe operation, communication and completion of paperwork.
Desirable
  • Previous experience working in plant haulage, construction or civil engineering sectors.
  • Familiarity with escort/abnormal load procedures and permits for oversize or overweight movements.
  • Additional qualifications such as banksman/signaller training, manual handling, first aid or HGV defensive driving.
  • Experience with basic vehicle maintenance and pre‑departure safety checks.
What We Offer
  • Competitive pay and benefits package in line with experience and qualifications.
  • Ongoing training and development, including refresher courses for driving and load securing standards.
  • Supportive and inclusive working environment with opportunities for career progression within the business.
  • Opportunity to work on varied projects with industry‑leading equipment and a professional operations team.
