The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Cardiology intends to hire for one position at either the Sonographer (Pay Grade
5) or Sr. Sonographer (Pay Grade
7), based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. In your cover letter indicate which position you prefer or if you are interested in both.

Responsibilities

Perform complex ultrasound procedures at an advanced level, applying independent judgment to obtain diagnostic information for physicians, and provide education and mentorship to fellows, residents, and medical students. Activities include:

  • Sonographer:
    Perform and analyze pediatric cardiac ultrasonography studies, including M‑mode, 2D, Color Doppler, 3D echocardiograms, and fetal echocardiograms. Maintain quality diagnostic ultrasound scans accepted by the IAC and apply knowledge of congenital heart lesions to imaging of neonates, children, adults, and fetuses. Perform 3D echo studies of complex abnormalities, handle premature infants and critically ill children, participate in tele‑echo services, determine equipment malfunctions, and perform calibration and sterilization.
  • Senior Sonographer:
    Obtain and document comprehensive medical, psychosocial, and developmental histories; perform system‑focused or symptom‑specific examinations, devise care plans; collaborate with teams to provide primary, acute, and complex care; order and interpret diagnostic procedures; formulate differential diagnoses; prescribe pharmacologic, non‑pharmacologic, and procedural interventions; utilize evidence‑based protocols; provide specialty consultations; and facilitate transitions between care settings.
Qualifications – Sonographer
  • Completion of a two‑year or more accredited health science program plus a 12‑month formal education program in sonography or
  • CAAHEP accredited (or equivalent) program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, or Vascular Technology, or
  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree plus a 12‑month formal education program in sonography.
  • Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers within nine months of employment in Pediatric Cardiac Echocardiography.
  • Demonstrated understanding of cardiac physiology.
  • Willingness to travel to outreach clinics throughout Iowa.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Highly Desired Qualifications – Sonographer
  • Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare or science related field.
  • Registration in Fetal Echocardiography (not required).
Desired Qualifications – Sonographer
  • Experience in performing fetal and pediatric echocardiograms.
Qualifications – Senior Sonographer
  • A bachelor’s degree in Radiation Sciences or an allied health discipline, or equivalent education/experience.
  • CAAHEP accredited (or equivalent) program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, or Vascular Technology, or
  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree plus a 12‑month formal education program in sonography.
  • 3–5 years of progressively responsible experience in diagnostic or cardiac sonography.
  • Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or other national accreditation.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience providing clinical education to students, sonographers, residents.
Highly Desired Qualifications – Senior Sonographer
  • Bachelor’s degree in Radiation Sciences is highly desirable.
  • Registration in Fetal Echocardiography (not required).
Desired Qualifications – Senior Sonographer
  • Experience in performing fetal and pediatric echocardiograms.
