Overview

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences is seeking a 100% Pediatric Ophthalmic Technician (GC84) responsible for performing routine and advanced technical procedures as delegated by the physician, to collect medical data and assist in patient care. The technician works with pediatric patients and their caregivers, including those with developmental delay or disabilities, to obtain medical histories and precise measurements and documentation of visual function and related ophthalmic data.

Responsibilities
  • Obtain and document visual function data for patients of all ages, including nonverbal patients, using appropriate methods (induced tropia, fixation preference, Teller’s acuity, LEA symbols, HOTV with crowding bars) for distance and near vision.
  • Assess age- and ability-appropriate visual acuity in patients with nystagmus and amblyopia.
  • Perform manual lensometry including prisms; conduct confrontational visual fields; assess stereopsis; evaluate ocular motility; perform alternate cover testing for eye alignment; assess pupillary function; administer age-appropriate color plates; perform iCare tonometry; perform autorefraction as appropriate for age and refractive error.
  • Administer eye drops as necessary and instructed; help maintain clinic flow and coordinate clinics.
  • Assist physicians with clinical procedures (e.g., ROP or bundled exams) and take history and document concerns from patients and families relevant to the appointment.
  • Update status board with location and monitor the workflow to minimize delays; stock rooms and ensure all equipment is functional during down times and before clinic begins.
  • Perform duties in both the Pediatric Specialty Clinic (PSC) and the main Ophthalmology clinic located in the Pomerantz Family Pavilion at University of Iowa Health Care.
Job Performance and Work Habits
  • Perform procedures and diagnostic tests such as visual acuity, stereopsis, eye alignment screening, tonometry, lensometry, eye drop installation, auto-refraction, and other tests as appropriate to the assigned subspecialty clinic; enter data into the computer.
  • Maintain aseptic technique to prevent cross-contamination and follow infection control standards; care for patients with contagious infections per written protocols.
  • Clean, stock, and prepare rooms; calibrate and maintain equipment; document malfunctions and submit repair tickets; use supplies in a cost-efficient manner.
  • Document patient information regarding testing; prepare charts for next day’s clinics; coordinate and schedule procedure rooms in collaboration with PSC Assistant Clinic Manager; complete assignments and assume responsibility for special duties; maintain professional appearance.
Dependability and Interpersonal Relations
  • Demonstrate punctual and dependable attendance; consider patient and staff needs when taking time off with adequate notice; maintain a safe environment; attend in-service education programs.
  • Use appropriate organizational lines of authority; accept constructive criticism; collaborate with other departments and staff to ensure continuity of care and smooth transitions for pediatric patients across multi-appointment visits.
  • Demonstrate courtesy and respect toward patients and families; maintain patient confidentiality and report unusual incidents or concerns.
Conduct Toward Patients
  • Provide comfort and courtesy to children of all ages and abilities and to their parents; extend the same consideration to older patients with developmental delays; maintain patient confidentiality and a respectful approach toward patients and visitors.
  • Report unusual patient incidents, complaints, or concerns as appropriate.
Other Responsibilities
  • Follow university, hospital, and department policies and procedures; respect patient and staff confidentiality; assist co-workers as needed; report to work on schedule and manage breaks and absences per policy; perform other tasks as assigned and complete projects within agreed-upon time unless extensions are approved.
