is seeking a
100% Supervisor, Medical Laboratory Scientist; IRL is an offsite clinic for University of Iowa Health Care, located in Coralville, Iowa.
This role p erforms supervisory functions for staff within the lab at Iowa River Landing (IRL). Collaborates with the Director of Clinical Functions to facilitate quality, patient oriented and efficient operations of the clinical laboratory. Performs clinical laboratory analyses on biological specimens to provide information used in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease. Many of the procedures involve numerous highly complex tests and techniques that require the use of professional judgment.
This position will have responsibility for leading other laboratory professionals. This position will require frequent interaction and consultation with other members of the IRL management team and with leadership staff in the Department of Pathology.

Job Relationships:
Administrative supervision is received from the Director, Clinical Services, IRL. Functional and technical supervision for laboratory operations is received from the Lab Managers in the Core Laboratories and by the Operations Manager in Pathology, and by the Medical Director of the Laboratory. Functional supervision is exercised over professional, technical and student employees in the IRL lab.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform quantitative and qualitative analyses on clinical and research specimens.
- Serve as the technical expert for patient test result interpretation, specific tasks, work processes and procedures performed in a unit/shift.
- Communicate and disseminate general information and policy or procedure changes to unit/shift personnel.
- Plan, prioritize and direct work activities in the designated unit/shift to ensure smooth and efficient operation.
- Investigate and resolve problems concerning patient testing and procedures.
- Assist with interviewing and selecting new staff.
- Provide leadership for discipline-specific work groups.
- Participate in the design and implementation of new procedures and instrumentation.
- Monitor equipment performance, diagnose instrument problems/malfunctions and make repairs or initiate service requests.
- Conduct, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of employee performance; work collaboratively with the IRL HR manager to address employee performance concerns.
- Monitor quality control, quality assurance and proficiency testing; implement corrective actions for effective testing.
- Coordinate and participate in continuing education activities and events.
- Coach and mentor staff members to facilitate professional development.
- Monitor employee compliance with approved regulatory and departmental guidelines.
- Assist in developing the strategic goals and objectives for the laboratory as directed by the Clinical Practice Administrator.
- Develop, implement and evaluate training programs for assigned staff.
- Assist with the development of competency assessment tools.
- Conduct competency assessment for staff as required.
- Collaborate with other IRL and UI Health Care departmental committees, vendors and external health care professionals.
