Position: Nursing Manager - Orthopedics, Trauma Spine (3RC)

The University of Iowa Health Care Medical Surgical Services Division is seeking a Nurse Manager for the Orthopedics, Trauma, Spine Unit (3RC).

In April 2023, our acute orthopedics unit (3

RCP) expanded to become a 48‑bed adult surgical unit focusing on the care of orthopedics, trauma, and spine patients. During this exciting time of unit growth, we are looking for motivated individuals that are passionate about the quality of care they provide.

The Orthopedics, Trauma, Spine team is committed to providing patient‑centered care that helps patients and their families manage both the physiological and psychological aspects of their illness or injury. Our care embodies excellent clinical skills and compassionate support to achieve maximum quality of life.

Key Areas of Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:

  • Hire, develop and manage the performance of staff in a nursing unit, clinic or other patient care area. Responsible for talent management and succession planning. Follow and apply leave management policies and HR procedures, including collective bargaining agreements.
  • Prepare or assist with budget development; provide projections and recommendations. Monitor and maintain unit operating budget within targets, analyze variances, and take corrective action.
  • Lead to establish efficient systems that ensure optimal patient outcomes, identify quality initiatives, allocate resources, and evaluate patient satisfaction data to enhance experience. Ensure unit is survey ready.
  • Coordinate care within a multidisciplinary team to maximize patient satisfaction and continuity of care. Identify needs, trends, and forecasts to provide quality care and appropriate flex staffing.
  • Develop action plans that align with health‑care strategic goals, monitor implementation, and report progress to nursing leadership.
  • Advocate for unit needs with healthcare leaders; facilitate multidisciplinary problem solving and use unit councils to improve patient outcomes.
  • Educate and mentor staff on complex patient care issues; provide clinical education and coaching to develop competency and professionalism. Support education of healthcare students.
  • Encourage staff participation in evidence‑based practice research and incorporate best practices into operations.
  • Demonstrate constructive and civil collaboration with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Utilize existing resources to achieve desired organizational outcomes, demonstrating ethical behavior in varied situations.
  • Exceed customer service expectations, communicating effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Show knowledge of budgeting policies and administrative practices.
  • Apply management principles and decision‑making skills effectively.
  • Understand legislation and regulatory bodies affecting health‑care and clinical research.
  • Apply performance‑management systems to improve team and organizational performance.

Percent of Time: 100%,
40 hours per week

Schedule: Day shifts with flexibility to meet unit needs

Location: Regular salaried position located in Iowa City, Iowa
