The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Staff Nurse (RN) for the Ortho Unit (3
RCE). The Ortho Unit is part of UI Health Care's Medical Surgical Services (MSS) division. 3
RCE is a 48-bed adult orthopedic surgical unit providing care for patients who experience trauma, tumor removal, reconstructive joint surgery, spine surgery, hand surgery, foot surgery, amputations, sports injuries, skeletal traction, and wound care.
In April 2023, the acute orthopedics unit expanded to a 48-bed adult surgical unit focusing on orthopedics, trauma, and spine patients. The staff are committed to patient-centered care, combining exceptional clinical skills with compassionate care to achieve maximum quality of life. The unit emphasizes teamwork to support holistic patient-centered care and a healthy work environment.

Responsibilities- Provide care for patients on the Orthopedics, Trauma, and Spine unit, including those undergoing trauma care, reconstructive surgery, spine surgery, hand and foot surgeries, amputations, and sports injuries.
- Assist with anesthesia, perioperative care, postoperative monitoring, wound care, and rehabilitation milestones as appropriate to the unit.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to ensure evidence-based, patient-centered care plans.
- Document nursing assessments, interventions, and patient progress accurately in medical records.
- Percent of Time: 60% (24 hours/weekend)

- Education Required:
An Associate’s Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required. - Experience/
Skills:
Excellent written and verbal communication; strong interpersonal skills with patients, families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members; general computer skills including proficiency with multiple databases (e.g., Microsoft Excel); current Iowa nursing license by date of hire.
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is highly desired; active enrollment in a BSN program is desirable if not yet obtained.
