Staff Nurse - Adult Short Stay Unit (LL JCP) 90%, Day Shifts

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Staff Nurse (RN) for the Lower Level Short Stay Unit (LL JCP). The unit is part of UI Health Care’s Medical Surgical Services (MSS) Division and features 30 private patient rooms. It is designed to care for patients admitted under observation or recovery level of care, with a focus on timely treatment.

The patient population includes medical and surgical patients typically admitted for an estimated 24‑48 hour stay. Common medical observation diagnoses include chest pain, abdominal pain, back pain, and syncope. Surgical recovery patients span procedures such as orthopedics, urology, plastics, cardiology, and others.

A Staff Nurse will assess patients’ nursing care needs, evaluate the effectiveness of care provided, and integrate nursing theory and research into clinical practice.

Characteristic Duties of our Staff Nurses include but are not limited to:

  • Applies nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness.
  • Assesses patient health care preferences and expectations.
  • Collaboratively coordinates the continuum of care across settings.
  • Develops patient care plans based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic conditions that prescribe interventions to attain expected outcomes.
  • Implements patient care plans according to patient priorities, including interventions identified through nursing diagnoses. Documents reports of interventions and patient/family response.
  • Collaborates and integrates contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plans.
  • Develops, coordinates and implements transfer/discharge planning throughout the episode of care.
  • Implements nursing interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Follows universal precautions.

Percent of Time
: 90%, 36 hours per week.

:
Days Shifts with a weekend and holiday rotations as assigned.

Salary
: $61,183 minimum at 100% effort, commensurate with experience.

Pay Differentials
:
Shift differentials for evening, night, and weekend shifts; premium pay for additional shifts greater than 4 hours; inpatient differential of $10,000 per year based on percent time.

Education Required

  • Associate’s, Diploma, Baccalaureate, Professional Master’s (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or Master’s Degree (MSN, MA) in Nursing.

Experience Required

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • General computer skills, including proficiency in managing multiple databases and Microsoft Excel.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa, required by date of hire.

Desirable Qualifications
:

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is highly desired.
  • If the Baccalaureate degree is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is desirable.
