Health Office Secretary

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • AA or BA or Para Certification
  • Must possess organizational skills including:
  • Demonstrates initiative and exercises good judgment when unexpected problems arise.

  • Understands job procedures: knows CPR first aid, and special health techniques.
  • Utilizes area resources when necessary.

  • Require minimum supervision.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality.

  • Health office is covered at all times during the school day.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO :
Health Services Manager in collaboration with building Principal

JOB GOAL :

Work cooperatively with all building staff to assist the management ofhealth services in order to enhance the morale of school district personnel, promote the overall efficiency of the school system, and maximize the educational opportunities available to each child.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Provides basic first aid to the ill and injured.
  • Contacts the school nurses or designated persons in case of major illness or serious injury.
  • Contacts the parents of the ill or injured student in accordance with the established health office policy and, if necessary, prepare the student to be transported.
  • Confers with school nurses regarding student absences for health reasons.
  • Records and communicates with teachers and other personnel regarding the disposition of students sent to the health office.
  • Maintains and files health office records.
  • Receives and relays telephone messages pertaining to individual student health problems.
  • Assists the assistant principal with other office work as time is available.
  • Assists the school nurses in scheduling and performing routine screening procedures, informing teachers of screening results, and following up on referrals.
  • Assists in communicable disease prevention by reviewing and communicating immunization needs of students.
  • Is knowledgeable of and able to identify common health concerns of adolescent students, i.e. obesity, acne, depression, etc.
  • Is knowledgeable of appropriate referral patterns.
  • Records health office visits, students' symptoms, and the disposition in electronic and written records.
  • Communicate with the school nurses and teacher(s) as necessary.
  • Supervises students and records medications that need to be taken during school hours.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of students and genuinely like children.
  • Is steady and even-tempered in working with others.
  • Projects a positive outlook.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively.
  • Is tactful with students and fellow employees.
  • Uses discretion and respects the confidentiality of information entrusted to him/her.
  • Contribution to Building and Program Cohesiveness
  • Supports administrative policy.
  • Shares skills in a supportive, caring, and positive manner.
  • Is open-minded and friendly toward others.
  • Recognizes and supports program goals.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT :

  • TBD
    - Contract Days. Salary and calendar year to be evaluated in accordance with the Negotiated Agreement between the Iowa City Education Association and the Iowa City Community School District.

EVALUATION :
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the District’s policy on Evaluation, State Statute, and any applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
