Description:
A Postdoctoral Scholar position is available immediately at the Institute for Vision Research and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. The research position focuses on retinal cell biology, human donor eyes, and gene expression. The laboratory employs primary and iPSC‑derived cultures of endothelial cells and multidisciplinary approaches ranging from molecular biology to biochemistry, cell biology, and proteomics to determine causes and cures of retinal diseases.
Applicants should have a solid background in medicine and engineering. Individuals who are highly motivated and willing to take risks for innovation are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate is expected to work independently, yet in a collaborative environment with a group of scientists with various expertise.
- Work independently on basic research tasks with oversight by Principal Investigator (PI).
- Investigate pathophysiological mechanisms of macular degeneration using donor eyes and human cell culture systems.
- Conduct molecular, biochemical, and cell biological experiments to elucidate molecular functions of newly identified disease‑causing genes.
- Perform computational analyses integrating genotype with transcriptomic and proteomic analyses.
- Collect and analyze experimental data and evaluate relevance of the data.
- Compare experimental data with published work and develop and test new hypotheses.
- Contribute to documentation of equipment and procedures.
- Supervise and collaborate with graduate students and other members of the laboratory.
- Prepare manuscripts for publication.
- Present results in departmental seminars and at scientific meetings.
- Contribute to new or continuing research grant proposals to obtain funding for research activities.
- Contribute to progress reports required by funding agencies.
- Supervise adherence to safety and compliance guidelines when necessary.
A PhD or MD degree is required.
Required Qualifications- A background in medicine and/or engineering.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
