Hospital Security Officer – Downtown Campus (60% Part-Time, Weekends)
University of Iowa Health Care – Downtown Campus is seeking a Hospital Security Officer. Safety & Security Officers provide the highest quality of public safety to protect life and property. Officers perform security services, including electronic surveillance and patrol of the campus, enforce policy & procedures, and coordinate response to various potential problems and emergencies for patients, employees, and visitors. The officer works with the Environment of Care committee to help establish a safe environment of care and participates in employee awareness and education.
Responsibilities- Conduct investigations of incidents and prepare clear and accurate reports.
- Enforce hospital regulations, guidelines and policies as needed.
- Respond to routine and emergency calls for service.
- Patrol areas as assigned to ensure personal, building and equipment security.
- Perform inspections as assigned, including fire extinguishers, emergency lights, exit lights, sprinkler flow and tamper checks, fire drills and hazard surveillance.
- Prepare daily reports of shift activity and provide written communication to other safety & security officers.
- Provide emergency response as requested or needed for disasters, fire, tornado, duress alarms, hazardous materials decontamination, infant abductions, bomb threat, non-violent crisis intervention, aggressive patients, guests or visitors.
- Provide information and assistance to patients, visitors, and employees.
- Provide escort service, lockouts, jump starts as requested.
- Provide traffic control and enforcement measures on all Mercy owned or operated property.
- Receive property found in hospital, inventory, and properly enter into lost and found system.
- Transfer deposits between the hospital and financial institutions to maintain security of funds.
- Basic understanding of key management programming.
Schedule: 12 hour shifts 7pm-7am Saturday & Sunday.
Percent of Time: 60%.
- Regular salaried position located in Iowa City, Iowa.

- Two years’ experience in security and safety, or fire safety, or law enforcement; or
- One year of post-high school education related to security and safety and one year of experience in security and safety; or
- Two years of post-high school education related to security and safety.
- Possession of appropriate driver’s license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards.
- Ability to obtain basic certification from International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) within 6 months of hire and maintain certification for duration of employment.
- Two years of customer service experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office computer software applications (i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc).
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
