What You Can Expect
As the Electrical Distribution Supervisor, you will lead the operations and maintenance team responsible for the University of Iowa's campus electrical distribution systems.
This skilled team installs, maintains, and repairs the infrastructure that powers world‑class medical care, groundbreaking research, Division I athletics, and classrooms shaping the next generation. Your role ensures reliable service for one of the Midwest's leading university campuses in a stable, year‑round operation.
You will oversee maintenance planning, assign daily tasks, and drive continuous improvement in safety, compliance, and documentation.
What You Will Do- Lead and develop the team responsible for installing, operating, troubleshooting, calibrating, repairing, and maintaining electric utility substations and distribution systems, including medium‑voltage breakers, switch gear, transformers, cabling, and plant electrical equipment (motors, starters, and controls) up to 15 kV.
- Plan and coordinate work by determining job sequences, safety procedures, procuring materials, scheduling outages, and directing outage restoration during unplanned events.
- Ensure reliable operations by managing Operations & Maintenance activities of Electrical Distribution to achieve reliability and quality of service standards, recommending staffing plans, and driving efficiency while controlling costs.
- Champion safety and compliance
, promoting a strong safety culture and implementing corporate policies and directives. - Optimize asset performance by collaborating with the Distribution management team to develop maintenance practices and capital projects that enhance operability and reliability, focusing on preventative and predictive maintenance using CMMS.
- Support staff development through training, interpreting and assisting with maintenance of technical documentation (wiring diagrams, schematics, system logs, drawings, and utility systems) and fostering continuous improvement.
- Provide on‑call coverage as part of a scheduled rotation for emergency response when required.
- Minimum high‑school diploma or GED;
State of Iowa Class A or B Journeyman Electrician license. Licensure from other states will be considered for reciprocity. - Journey‑level electrician with seven (7) years in the trade, including apprenticeship, and at least three (3) years working with high voltage (600 V–15 kV) in utility, power plant, or industrial environments.
- Strong knowledge of electric utility systems, equipment, tools, troubleshooting methods, and electrical codes, including local, state, and national standards.
- Deep understanding of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and compliance programs for environments such as confined spaces, aerial/elevated locations, extreme temperature conditions, excavations, and other environmental conditions.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation; perform basic math; and maintain accurate records.
- Skilled in analyzing system issues, recommending improvements, implementing changes, and training team members.
- Effective oral and written communication skills for collaborating with staff, vendors, suppliers, students, staff, general public, and stakeholders, and ability to follow and convey instructions clearly.
- This role requires attendance at a works site on a daily basis.
- Must be available to travel domestically up to 10% of the time and with the need for some overnight trips.
- Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license/clean driving record; for the use of company vehicle to drive to site locations.
- Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb (ladders, stairs, ramps), kneel, push, pull, and lift at least 50 lb; perform repetitive motions; and work in confined spaces and elevated areas.
- Corrected eyesight to 20/40 for reading instruments and manuals; ability to hear alarms and detect equipment noise changes.
- Must be able to wear PPE, including respirators, fall protection, hard‑hat, safety shoes, and safety glasses.
