Position: Plumber 8 hrs/day

Iowa City Community School District Plumber DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current Plumber license from the State of Iowa
  • Possess the ability to size, specify, design, cost estimate, order and install all types of plumbing parts and equipment
  • Experience in troubleshooting, servicing, and repairing commercial plumbing systems
  • Experience in gas pipe installations, sprinkler systems, outside irrigation systems, and public water systems
  • Knowledge of local and state codes and industry standards
  • Must have a backflow license or be able to obtain one with the first year of employment
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable per Crafts Classification Level
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both verbal and written
  • Maintain a current, valid driver’s license
  • Experience with computers and email

JOB GOALS
:
Under the supervision of the Craft’s Manager, direct the renovation, repair, and maintenance of all plumbing systems in the district as well perform the duties to accomplish this in order to enhance student learning, promote the overall efficiency of the school system, and maximize the educational opportunities available to each child.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform the work of department plumbing technician
  • Diagnose, repair, design or replace all district plumbing fixtures, equipment and systems including but not limited to hand washer, water heaters and sprinkler systems
  • Diagnose, repair, design or replace all district gas pipe systems
  • Ability to use all plumbing trade standard equipment
  • Manage, inspect and report on work performed by service contractors related field
  • Work with authorities having jurisdiction to satisfy inspection requirements
  • Assist in the design of renovation, upgrade and remodeling projects in coordination with other departments
  • Assists with general plumbing operations as needed
  • Maintain a safe work environment
  • Shall be able to respond to critical needs at any time of day or night, extending beyond a typical work day in coordination with other technicians.
  • Member of the district snow team
  • Other duties as assigned
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bending, lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing, and continuous standing
  • May be exposed to dust, dirt, chemicals, fumes, inclement weather and UV rays
  • Work is both indoors and outdoors
  • Must be physically and medically able to wear respiratory protection
CRAFTS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL:

Classification Level to be determined by Human Resource Director with recommendation from the Director of Physical Plant

Note:

All Groups B through F must meet the requirements of the previous level to qualify for advancement to the next highest Group. Experience can be with the District or in a closely related industry position.

Crafts Level Assistant (Group

A)

Beginning level, one year or less of crafts experience and commit to an apprenticeship or training program.

Crafts Level 1 (Group

B)

Part of an apprenticeship or training program with less than 2 years of experience.

Crafts Level 2 (Group

C)

Third year of apprenticeship or training program or completion of two years of trade school.

Crafts Level 3 (Group

D)

Fourth year of apprenticeship training or two years of trade school plus two years of experience.

Crafts Level Journeyman 1 (Group

E)

Minimum 5 years of experience and/or trade school plus 3 years of experience, both with demonstrated proficiency and recommended by Physical Plant Director. Journeyman License issued by the State of Iowa, required for Plumbers, Electricians, Mechanics, HVAC Technicians and Digital Controls Technicians.

Crafts Level Journeyman 2 (Group

F)

Minimum of 10 years of experience, demonstrated proficiency and recommended by Physical Plant Director.

Crafts Level Master (Group G)

Masters License issued by the State of Iowa, open only to Plumbers, Electricians, Mechanics, HVAC Technicians, Digital Controls Technician

Crafts Level Lead (Group H)

Designated lead crew person, leadership ability and recommended by Physical Plant Director.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Twelve-month year, wages and calendar year to be established by the Board of Education

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the District’s policy on Evaluation, State Statute, and any applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
