The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Division of State-Operated Specialty Care, Bureau of State Training School (STS) is seeking a Switchboard Operator/Receptionist to join our team. This full‑time position is scheduled Friday‑Monday, 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Occasionally overtime may be offered.
The Switchboard Operator/Receptionist has no direct contact with students. The primary function is to operate as the complete communication command post for security, movement, emergencies, and visitors. The role responds to all calls for assistance by relaying appropriate information in a timely manner and answering all incoming phone calls. The operator also directs traffic and visitors to desired locations. Desired candidates are reliable, able to multitask under pressure, maintain composure, prioritize calls and actions, and have working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
JobFunctions
- Answer phone calls and relay callers to appropriate sources.
- Document movement of students and staff on or off grounds.
- Document visitors.
- Document emergency responses.
- Serve as the central communications operator for the entire State Training School operation.
- Contact law enforcement as appropriate.
- File documents.
- Assist in mission‑critical responses and coordinate as a focal point of operations.
- Log and distribute emergency response supplies.
Applicants must complete a background check to be considered for the position.

No specific education or work experience required.
Additional Qualification Requirements:
Within a period of time after hire, as determined by the appointing authority, employees in this class may be required to type at least 40 words per minute net as demonstrated by a typing examination.
