Job DescriptionA Position in the Iowa Department of Correction is more than a job. It's a calling. Responsibilities- Patrol facilities and make security checks; inspect all areas for safety/security deficiencies; search individuals, vehicles, packages, mail, equipment, clothing, and offender quarters for contraband items.
- Escort offenders, visitors, and staff inside and outside the institution and verify possession of appropriate passes or legal documents; verify offender population in an assigned area at regular/irregular intervals and participate in offender counts.
- Interact with the general public, visitors, and victims in person or via phone; provide information, security, and assistance.
- Observe offender behavior and interactions; communicate observations to supervisory and program staff to ensure effective security and consistent application of offender change principles.
- Continuously interact with offenders, assisting in the development of problem solving skills, providing positive reinforcement, and instituting corrective measures when necessary and authorized by law/policy.
- Instruct offenders in policy, procedure, expectations; facilitate the development of attitudes and skills necessary for successful adaptation to life within an institution.
- Role model pro‑social attitudes and behaviors that convey respect for others and acknowledge that offenders can change their lives.
- Maintain logs, prepare reports, and enter information into the DOC electronic offender record system.
- Supervise offender work assignments and evaluate work performance.
- Operate electronic doors, telephone systems, two‑way radios, intercom, alarm systems, closed‑circuit TV systems, computer terminals and use weapons/offender control devices.
- Attend training classes and seminars; may train or serve as team leader for other staff.
- Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency.
- Successfully pass psychological tests.
- Background investigation check.
- Post‑offer health screen administered by an institutional physician.
- Urinalysis screen for drugs.
- All new employee training during probationary period, including orientation and emergency preparedness training.
- Designated positions may require a Commercial Driver's License and endorsements within a period of time.
