POSITION OVERVIEW
Position Title: Director of Software and AI
Division: Robotics
OverviewThe Director of Software and AI will serve as a strategic technology leader responsible for defining and executing the company's artificial intelligence and software development roadmap for humanoid robotics systems. This role requires deep technical expertise, visionary leadership, and cross-functional collaboration to build and mentor high-performing teams of robotics engineers, AI/ML specialists, and software developers. The role drives innovation in perception systems, decision-making algorithms, manipulation capabilities, and control systems while ensuring seamless integration with hardware, product design, and operations.
You will shape the future of humanoid robotics by bringing cutting-edge research from lab to real-world deployment, creating robots that can safely and intelligently operate in human environments.
Responsibilities- Strategic Leadership:
Define AI and software strategy aligned with business objectives and market opportunities; establish technical vision for perception, planning, control, and human-robot interaction systems; identify emerging technologies and competitive threats; set objectives and KPIs; represent the company externally. - Team Building:
Recruit and scale world-class teams; foster a culture of innovation, learning, and collaboration; mentor technical leaders; manage performance reviews; promote diversity and inclusion; implement engineering best practices for code review, documentation, and knowledge sharing. - Technical Leadership:
Own end-to-end software architecture from embedded firmware to cloud; oversee perception systems; guide decision-making and planning algorithms for autonomous operation; ensure stable control systems; establish simulation environments and digital twins; define data architecture for collection, annotation, storage, and retrieval. - AI/ML Development:
Oversee ML lifecycle from data collection to deployment; guide model-based and learning-based control; ensure AI/ML deployment on edge platforms with latency/power considerations; implement monitoring for performance, drift detection, and continuous evaluation; establish A/B testing frameworks. - Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Partner with hardware teams for co-design; collaborate with product management on technical specs; coordinate with operations on production, testing, and QA; engage with safety/regulatory teams for standards compliance. - Safety & Security:
Enforce safety-critical development practices; ensure safety standards for operation around humans; implement security practices for privacy and secure communications; design for reliability with testing; implement monitoring and telemetry for remote diagnostics.
- Education
:
Master’s in Computer Science, AI, Robotics, EE, ME, or related field;
PhD strongly preferred - Experience
: 8-10 years in software development and AI/ML with increasing responsibility; 3-5 years technical leadership managing 15+ engineers; proven experience shipping robotics products or complex AI systems to production; hands-on experience with humanoid/legged robots or manipulation systems preferred - Technical Expertise
:
Software & Infrastructure — scalable architectures for robotic systems, data infrastructure (databases, ETL, streaming), simulation environments (Gazebo, Isaac Sim, Mu Jo Co ), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure);
Control & Planning — model-based control, learning-based control, behavior models, trajectory optimization, whole-body control for humanoids;
Navigation — path planning, semantic mapping, human-aware navigation;
Real-Time Systems — ROS/ROS2, RTOS, deterministic computing, middleware;
Edge Computing — AI/ML deployment on Jetson/RB5/Intel platforms; model optimization; ML — PyTorch/Tensor Flow/JAX, transformers, MLOps;
Programming — C++ and Python, Git, CI/CD, testing
- Publications in top robotics/AI conferences; humanoid/legged locomotion experience; haptics and force control; NLU and human-robot interaction; regulatory knowledge (CE, FCC); startup experience; successful product launches; distributed team management; open-source contributions
