Overview
Clarinda Correctional Facility is seeking a disciplined, strategic leader to serve as the Correctional Security Manager at Clarinda Correctional Facility. The role focuses on the facility’s day-to-day security operations with oversight of staff and security processes to support the rehabilitative mission of the Clarinda Correctional Facility and the Iowa Department of Corrections. The position reports to the Associate Warden of Security.
Key Responsibilities- Operational Oversight:
Direct security activities, including perimeter control, internal movement, contraband interdiction, and emergency response coordination. - Leadership & Development:
Supervise and mentor subordinate supervisors (Captains/Sergeants). Conduct performance evaluations and oversee specialized training for correctional staff. Recognize staff achievements and participate in times when staff disciplinary actions require review. - Incident Management:
Serve as incident commander during emergencies. Lead investigations into security breaches, use-of-force incidents, or rule violations. - Policy Implementation:
Ensure the facility operates in strict accordance with state/federal laws, departmental policies, and facility procedures. Participate in annual policy reviews and the creation of policies for security-related areas. - Resource Management:
Oversee shift management to minimize overtime while maintaining safety standards. Oversee maintenance and inventory of security equipment (firearms, restraints, communication gear, etc.). - Risk Assessment:
Conduct regular internal security audits and vulnerability assessments. Recommend and implement corrective actions and ensure operational efficiency through ongoing security program reviews.
- Weekly rounds of the institution to ensure optimal security operations in all facets.
- Serve as a duty officer on a rotational basis and participate in assigned meetings.
- Participate in the hiring/promotion process ensuring affirmative action/equal opportunity standards in hiring and promoting staff.
- Interact with the public to maintain a positive image of the facility, staff, and institution.
- Act as a PREA investigator when called upon to lead investigations for the institution.
Primary hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with one day each week on the 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM shift.
All new hires are required to complete:
- A background check and successful completion after hire of a three-week Pre-service training program in Des Moines, IA.
- Successful completion of a six-month probationary period during which final job suitability is determined.
