SummaryA person in this position usually reports to an area supervisor, who reports to the Manufacturing Clear Span Manager or Weld Manager. The Machine Operator 3 is responsible for planning and producing a variety of machine parts or components and operating those machines with minimal supervision to meet ship dates. This role requires selecting programs on machines to produce parts that meet print specifications.
It is a safety‑sensitive position because the individual may operate forklifts, combi’s, CNC machines, jigs, fixtures, tube benders, drill presses, saws, punch presses, grinders, belt sanders, robotic welders, shears, milling machines, and other power and hand tools.
- Meet all criteria as a Machine Operator 1 and 2.
- Produce machined and constructed items by programming, setting, and operating CNC machines.
- Plan machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, material specifications, surface locations, and machining parameters, and understand tolerance principals.
- Operate CNC machines while maintaining quality and safety standards.
- Make slight program modifications for at least one machine.
- Keep accurate records in E10 and other relevant systems.
- Maintain equipment and supplies.
- Understand cutting tool feeds, speeds, and tool life.
- Set up and program prove‑outs and optimize programs for simple parts.
- Program mills, plasma cutters, and other equipment, including zero and reference points, tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculate requirements using basic math.
- Participate in educational opportunities and read technical publications.
- Troubleshoot and identify root causes of quality issues systematically.
- Program machines to produce parts that meet print specifications.
- Teach co‑workers through formal and informal training.
- Recommend fixtures that increase productivity, repeatability, or quality.
- Adjust and reprogram controls to maintain specifications.
- Change fixtures on machines as necessary.
- Read and understand blueprints and shop drawings.
- Load, unload material, and set up machines for standard and special production runs.
- Use micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other measuring devices accurately.
- Promote ESAPCO and build a positive team environment.
- Keep the area and floor space containing the machines clean and well‑maintained.
- Adhere to all safety and OSHA regulations.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
- One year of machine operation preferred.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Knowledge of general N/C and other machine protocols and manufacturing methods.
- Knowledge of safety requirements and OSHA regulations.
- Knowledge of corporate production methods and safety procedures.
- Ability to read blueprints, work instructions, schematics, and use a tape measure.
- Ability to select programs on N/C machines.
- Proficiency in producing parts and components from drawings and specifications.
- Ability to use tools safely and effectively.
- Ability to handle production raw materials.
- Strong tool and equipment skills.
- Strong ability to follow directions.
- Strong problem‑solving skills.
- Effective communication skills appropriate for the job.
- Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- One year of machine operation experience preferred.
- Forklift certification is a plus.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; must read and follow blueprints, interpret drawings, and use a tape measure.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Physical DemandsRegularly required to continuously stand, walk, talk, hear, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally required to sit. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and perform carrying, pushing/pulling, kneeling, crawling, and squatting tasks.
Work EnvironmentExposed to fluctuating indoor temperatures, from cooler to warmer; environment may be dry, dusty, humid, cold, or hot indoors and outdoors.
