Polk County Conservation envisions a transformative process of utilizing Ameri Corps members to manage under-managed natural ecosystems in Iowa. The Natural Resources Crew Member plays a vital role in the management and stewardship of natural resources within Polk County Conservation’s parks and green spaces.

Working under the direction of the Environmental Steward Crew Leaders and Natural Resources full-time staff, the Crew Member participates in a wide range of natural resource projects aimed at enhancing and maintaining the ecological health and biodiversity of county-owned lands. The Half-Time Natural Resource Crew Member will serve with Polk County Conservation as part of the Polk County Conservation Ameri Corps Program.

Ameri Corps members develop skills that build a strong, leadership-packed résumé, earn a living stipend ($12,752) paid equally over the course of 900 hours from the start to end of service; and receive a Segal Education Award upon completion ($3,697.50) to pay for higher education or qualified student loans.

These positions are half-time members who will serve a minimum of 900 hours over 26 weeks, serving 38 hours per week. Successful applicants will not be employees of Polk County and will not be eligible for any employee benefits provided by Polk County.

Members complete CPR/First Aid, chainsaw safety, and Iowa Pesticide certifications (Categories 2, 4,
6). They also earn NWCG certifications (S-130, S-190) and may receive L-180 and IS-700.

Member Duties:
  • Implement timber stand improvement using mechanical or chemical methods under guidance from natural resources staff to enhance forest health.
  • Follow harvesting and burn plans to support native seed collection and prairie management.
  • Manage and plant native pollinator gardens and complete tree planting projects.
  • Educate the public and volunteers about project goals.
  • Build and maintain soft trails at Easter Lake Park after in-person training, using hand and power tools.
  • Maintain trails by reducing erosion, removing hazards, and controlling invasive species.
  • Participate in water quality monitoring with training from coordinators.
  • Communicate daily with staff and crews about project progress.
  • Engage in professional development and assist at volunteer events, supporting preparation, demonstrations, and in-field tasks.
