Garage Operations Assistant (GOA)
Job DescriptionThe Iowa Department of Transportation is looking for a decisive people‑leader who has a safety‑first mindset and the ability to lead efficient daily operations. As a GOA, you’ll guide a highway maintenance crew while prioritizing critical tasks to make Iowa roadways safer and fulfill our Mission – Making Lives Better Through Transportation.
Responsibilities- Manage and communicate daily maintenance and administrative operations with supervisor oversight.
- Perform basic office administration via technical devices and software.
- Prepare project plans within budgetary limitations.
- Review maintenance records, material supplies, inventory records, and crew reports.
- Oversee traffic control for maintenance activities.
- Coordinate snow operations and operate snow equipment.
- Assist with grading/paving projects.
Within five (5) months of hire, employees must reside within a 45‑minute driving time, under normal conditions, from the Albia Maintenance Garage.
Work ScheduleShift: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may vary and may include 24‑hour on‑call duty during emergencies or severe weather. Some overnight travel may be required.

- May be required to obtain pesticide/herbicide certifications or other certifications as needed.
- Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency, and at least four years of full‑time work in highway maintenance and equipment operation.
- All of the following (a, b, and c):
- Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency.
- Two years of full‑time work experience in highway maintenance and equipment operation.
- Two years of education and/or full‑time experience, where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in construction technology/management or engineering equals one year of full‑time experience.
- Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch, including two years of full‑time work as a Highway Technician Associate or Equipment Operator Senior.
- Obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License with required endorsements within specified time frames.
- Pre‑employment drug screen and participation in the employer’s random drug and alcohol testing program.
- Post‑offer pre‑employment physical verifying the ability to perform job duties.
- May be required to obtain and maintain Herbicide Applicator certification from the Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.
- Travel, including overnight travel, may be required.
- Employees are required to respond to emergency situations as needed.
- Employees must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
