Job Description
The Iowa Department of Transportation seeks a Highway Technician to support roadway construction and maintenance. This role involves inspections of construction projects and assisting maintenance garages with snow removal.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine sampling, inspection, and testing of materials used in highway construction.
  • Maintain construction records.
  • Inform contractors and project inspectors of construction quality issues and/or non‑complying work.
  • Operate snow equipment to remove snow, ice, and frost from roadways.
  • Perform routine maintenance and servicing of DOT equipment and vehicles.
  • Repair and maintain guardrails, signs, fences, and lighting.
  • Operate District paver as needed.

Shift and Residency

Shift: 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (hours may vary). The position may require on‑call availability 24 hours during emergencies and weather events. Some overnight travel may be required.
Residency:
Employees must reside within 45 minutes driving time of the assigned work location within five (5) months of hire.

Special Requirements

  • Commercial Learner’s Permit upon hire;
    Class A CDL with required endorsements within 5 months.
  • A successful U.S. DOT Clearinghouse query.
  • Pre‑employment physical and drug screen; ongoing participation in random testing programs.
  • May require pesticide/herbicide certifications or other certifications as needed.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalency plus at least two years of full‑time work in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, engineering survey field work, or materials inspection and testing.
  • Or two years of education and/or experience, where 30 semester hours of post‑high‑school education equals one year of full‑time experience.
  • Or current, continuous experience in the state executive branch with at least eighteen months of full‑time work as a Highway Technician Associate or Construction Technician Assistant.

Additional Qualification Requirements

  • Valid Commercial Learner’s Permit upon hire;
    Class A CDL with required endorsements must be obtained and maintained.
  • Pre‑employment drug screen and ongoing participation in the random drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Pre‑employment physical verifying the ability to perform duties described.
  • May require Herbicide Applicator certification, testing materials certification, or specialized equipment certification.
  • Travel, including overnight, may be required; employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
  • Must reside within a defined driving time of the assigned work location, as determined by the appointing authority.
  • Must respond to emergency situations as required and be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
