Overview

We are recruiting a Senior Highways Design Engineer to take a lead role in the delivery of complex highways schemes for a local authority–focused client.

This position combines technical leadership, project delivery and people management
, ensuring projects are delivered safely, compliantly and in line with programme, cost and quality expectations.

You will oversee design outputs, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, and act as a key point of contact for clients and stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the coordination and delivery of highway design packages across multiple projects
  • Undertake and oversee technical design checks and approvals
  • Ensure projects are delivered to agreed time, cost and quality targets
  • Manage and coordinate internal design teams and external sub-consultants
  • Ensure compliance with quality management systems and internal processes
  • Ensure designs comply with Health & Safety and Environmental legislation
  • Provide line management, mentoring and performance management for staff
  • Support training and professional development within the design team
  • Work collaboratively with clients to develop project objectives and technical solutions
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships
  • Provide commercial awareness and input into project delivery
Qualifications
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards chartership
  • Minimum 10 years’ relevant highways design experience
  • Proven experience leading multidisciplinary highways projects
  • Strong background in highways design and construction
  • Experience reviewing outputs from design software
  • Strong understanding of Local Authority design standards and contracts
  • Experience working with NEC contracts and contract administration
  • Knowledge of DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20 and related guidance
  • Strong Health & Safety leadership experience
  • Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Full UK/EEC driving licence
