Reporting to the Deputy Fire Marshal, the Fire Specialist Training Officer (Officer) is responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing programs involving and related to public and professional fire training for municipal, industrial, commercial, institutional fire protection. The Officer will assist in the effective implementation of fire safety prevention programs in all aspects. This position requires a highly motivated individual who can work with minimum supervision and be a highly effective team player.

This position will be the vehicle in which all training requirements by the Fire Marshal's Office will be administered. The Officer will research, develop, coordinate and deliver training programs which will involve all aspects of fire protection/prevention and public education including, mining and exploration site.

This position will promote a standardized, effective training program for all stakeholders, public, government, industry, institutions and the municipal interest within the Nunavut territorial boundaries. It will involve development and delivery of fire prevention and fire safety training to schools, hospitals, elder's home staff, detention centers, fire department personnel, community groups and organizations and mining industry safety staff. The Officer will be required to conduct fire prevention inspections of structures and facilities where directed by the Deputy Fire Marshal.

The Officer will be required as directed by the Deputy Fire Marshal to investigate and file detailed reports on fires. The Officer will also liaise with Nunavut Government officials, Community Councils, RCMP, Regional Health and Social Services Board, and other community agencies and groups to plan and promote public awareness of fire prevention procedures in the workplace, at home and in all schools.

The Officer will also encounter physical, mental and environmental demands such as;
Climbing ladders and entering confined spaces on a weekly basis;
Carrying equipment and performing tests that require a level of physical strength;
Travel by foot in harsh climatic conditions, such as deep snow, icy roads and wet muddy areas are normal occurrences. Extensive travel into remote locations in small aircraft is required.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through the following:

• Five (5) years' experience in the fire service, plus
• A recognized National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certifications or equivalent:
  • NFPA 1001 - Level 2, Fire Fighter Professional Qualification;
  • NFPA 1031 - Level 1, Fire Inspector;
  • NFPA 1033 - Fire Investigator or NFPA 921 - Fire and Explosion Investigator;
  • NFPA 1035 - Level 2, Fire and Life Safety Educator;
  • NFPA 1041 - Level 2, Fire Service Instructor;
• A Class 3 driver's license with Air Brake Certification or equivalent is required.
• Working towards, or successfully achieved, the following IFSAC certifications or equivalent are considered assets:
  • NFPA 1021 - Level1, Fire Officer;
  • NFPA 1002 - Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications.
• Fluency in two (2) or more of Nunavut's official languages is also considered an asset.
