Role SummaryThe Interpreter/Translator acts as an interpreter, using English and South Baffin Dialect Inuktitut languages, at meetings and also translates council and committee meeting minutes and correspondence in order to ensure that there is proper communication between Councilors, staff and the public.
Required Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Good knowledge of computer and other office equipment;
- Good ability to use computerized translation Software;
- Strong keyboarding skills with the ability to operate at high levels of speed and accuracy;
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in Inuktitut and English, with a thorough knowledge of spelling and punctuation;
- Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality;
- Strong interpersonal skills;
- Ability to manage multiple priorities/tasks while meeting set deadlines;
- Flexible availability including evenings is required for this role.
- Minimum Level of Education/Training:
Grade 12 or equivalent plus additional training in translation and simultaneous interpretation equipment. - Minimum Level of
Experience:
Minimum of 1 year experience in an Interpreter/Translator related role. - Assets:
- Completion of a recognized Interpreter/Translator program
- Ability to understand basic technical terminology for City Operating Services (Planning and Lands, Recreation, Fire and Engineering Services).
- French Language
- Additional Requirements:
The ability to work evenings in addition to regular workdays when needed for meetings for Council. - Security:
Due to the confidentiality associated with this position, a criminal record check is required. - Indigenous Language:
Required.
Equivalencies that include a combination of education and experience may be considered at the time of selecting candidates when the requisite skill attainment can be demonstrated. All relevant certifications are required at time of application. The successful candidate would be required to submit a Criminal Record Check.
