Position description

University of California, Irvine - Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences - Department of Statistics - Tenure Faculty Professor Position.

The Department of Statistics invites transformational leaders to submit an application to become its new Department Chair and Professor with Tenure, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.

The Chair will support the department's mission of research excellence, scientific discovery, and training in rigorous statistical methods. The successful candidate will be a nationally recognized leader with a strong reputation for research excellence and superior teaching. As Chair, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the department's future, attracting and mentoring the next generation of statistical researchers and educators.

The Chair will build upon departmental and university strengths, leading with passion and serving as an advocate for a group of talented and committed faculty, staff, and students from varying backgrounds.

Factors the search committee will be considering include:

  • Ability to lead the Department of Statistics toward a common and clearly articulated vision, overseeing its academic and administrative activities.
  • Articulation of a strong vision for the field of statistics and interrelationships with machine learning and computer science.
  • Ability to communicate the Department's vision with school, campus, and university administrative leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to foster a culture of excellence in research, teaching, and service within the department.
  • Proven track‑record of fostering excellence through the contribution of members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract, mentor, and develop faculty members who demonstrate potential for outstanding contributions to the field.
  • Ability to develop and implement a robust mentoring program for young faculty members and students, nurturing their professional growth and success.
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues at all levels—including administration, faculty, staff, and students—to obtain, manage, and sustain necessary resources to ensure departmental success and growth.
  • Dedication to rigorous and innovative pedagogy and academic training.
  • Dedication to producing and fostering rigorous and impactful, theoretical, methodological, and collaborative statistical research.
