Johnson & Johnson is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer for its Med Tech Electrophysiology team in Irvine, California. This role reports on‑site five days a week and plays a critical role in advancing catheter development within the Haifa Tech Incubator (HTI).
Job SummaryLead projects from concept to prototype, validate designs, and mentor junior engineers. Drive technical decisions, manage milestones, and de‑risk designs to support downstream development while collaborating across internal and external partners. Contribute to regulatory documentation and stay abreast of technology trends to maintain competitive advantage.
Job Responsibilities- Lead projects from initial concept through prototype development, ensuring alignment with clinical needs and regulatory pathways.
- Drive technical decisions, manage milestones, and de‑risk designs for downstream development.
- Architect prototypes, tools, and fixtures for pre‑clinical testing; design and implement validation protocols ensuring safety and manufacturability.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners to facilitate efficient technology transfer.
- Support knowledge transfer from incubation to development, including process characterization, risk assessments, and basic process validation.
- Contribute to technical documentation, design controls, and validation records to aid regulatory submissions.
- Stay informed on electrophysiology trends and translate insights into prototype concepts.
- Foster an entrepreneurial culture, contribute to process improvements, and accelerate incubation success.
- 8+ years in medical device R&D, with early prototyping experience an advantage.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline (Master’s preferred).
- Proven ability to lead projects from concept to prototype, supporting early clinical use.
- Expertise in miniaturization and advanced manufacturing techniques; proficiency in Solid Works, AutoCAD.
- Strong collaboration skills and ability to mentor junior engineers.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
- Up to 15% travel may be required.
- Experience with electromagnetically navigated devices.
- Design validation and process development expertise.
- Knowledge of manufacturing technologies.
- Familiarity with DTV/DTQ.
- Strong problem‑solving, analytical reasoning, and decision‑making skills.
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast‑paced, innovative environment.

Pay TransparencyBase pay range: $102,000 - $177,100. Eligible for an annual performance bonus and other incentive programs per company guidelines. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, legal insurance, 401(k), long-term incentive program, vacation up to 120 hours, sick time up to 40 hours, holiday pay up to 13 days, and additional personal and family time.
