Overview

Senior Consultant, Ports and Marine Civil/Structural Engineering. WSP USA is seeking a Senior Consultant, Ports and Marine Engineering to join our National Maritime Practice Group. This position can be based out of Irvine, San Diego, San Francisco (CA), Miami (FL), Portland (OR), Seattle (WA), or Houston (TX).

Job Description
This opportunity involves providing engineering support to technical staff, engineers, and project managers for the development, design, construction, and inspection of structures and facilities for port, marine, and intermodal rail terminal projects in public and private sectors. Facilities may include piers, wharves, port and upland marine terminals, seawalls/bulkheads, dry docks, marinas, and other nearshore/offshore facilities. The work product should meet or exceed industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Impact
  • Provide leadership for engineering tasks including data collection and analysis from the work site, survey data, technical reports and drawings, and other data sources for project development, design, and construction.
  • Lead development of construction plans and schedules, specifications, and project cost estimates for ports and marine projects. Prepare and implement site safety activity plans and coordinate field work activities.
  • Lead cross-functional teams on mid-level projects and multiple smaller projects, collaborating with other engineers and multi-disciplinary teams on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded projects. Track budgets and milestone progress; support completion of Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E).
  • Write technical reports and document findings using sketches, calculations, spreadsheets, technical drawings, and engineering software (including SAP
    2000 or similar FEM tools).
  • Apply advanced engineering techniques to develop design requirements, incorporating marine-practice standards. Identify site, design, and construction risks and provide mitigation solutions.
  • Create finite element models for fixed and floating marine structures under gravity, live loads, environmental loads, and seismic loads.
  • Prepare design documentation for structural components including steel and concrete systems, deep foundations, substructure and superstructure elements.
  • Prepare project task budgets and schedules for review.
  • Prepare and present findings and recommendations to internal/external team members and clients.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients professionally.
  • Conduct overwater and/or over-deck inspections of port terminals and assess condition of elements.
  • Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies; exercise ethical decision-making regarding funds and resources.
  • Complete all assigned trainings and perform additional duties as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant marine engineering design experience (including rehabilitation and new design)
  • EIT or equivalent licensure
  • Proficiency in analysis and design of marine projects; experience with SAP
    2000 or equivalent FEM software; design and detailing of reinforced and prestressed concrete and steel per ACI, AISC, PCI, and/or AASHTO
  • Experience with AutoCAD, REVIT, and related BIM tools
  • Experience in ports and marine projects
  • Understanding of multidisciplinary coordination and design standards and practices (domestic/international)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to produce technical reports
  • Self-leadership, attention to detail, multi-tasking, and ability to work independently or in a team
  • Commitment to workplace safety and compliance with health, safety, and harassment policies
  • Occasional travel may be required; ability to work schedules extending beyond a typical workweek
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering (ABET) with 7+ years of port/marine design experience
  • Registered Professional Engineer licensure preferred
  • Familiarity with marine terminal codes (MOTEMS, ASCE COPRI, PIANC, etc.) and DoD criteria (UFC, UFGC)
  • Experience with LSDYNA or related software
