Summary

The HV Transmission Engineer – Level 3 supports the Engineering Center team and is responsible for all stages of high‑voltage transmission line design and analysis up to 525 kV. The role develops innovative, efficient solutions to ensure safe and reliable electricity transport, reporting to the Director of SME. Working in Irvine, CA, the position requires Monday–Friday hours (8:00 am‑5:00 pm or 9:00 am‑6:00 pm) and up to 30% travel.

Job Functions & Responsibilities
  • Create conceptual and complete IFC designs across high‑voltage transmission line disciplines such as tower configurations, conductor selection, insulation, and line hardware.
  • Develop and review design deliverables (plan and profile drawings, structure loading tables, bills of material, etc.) for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Perform engineering studies and calculations (short‑circuit analysis, load flow, relay settings, grounding, harmonics, etc.) to ensure reliable, efficient substation operations.
  • Perform structural analysis and simulations to ensure the stability and resilience of transmission line structures, including lattice towers, monopoles, and foundations.
  • Evaluate the impact of wind, ice, seismic events, and other external factors on the performance of transmission line systems.
  • Conduct scoping, budgeting, scheduling, planning, executing, monitoring, and reporting of transmission line projects and proposals to ensure cost‑effective solutions.
  • Work with engineers, designers, drafters, and support staff to translate technical requirements into construction‑ready drawings and documentation.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical specifications, design drawings, and reports that document the transmission line design process, calculations, assumptions, and recommendations.
  • Review vendor drawings, specifications, and proposals, ensuring proper equipment and materials (poles, towers, conductors, insulators, etc.) are selected.
  • Ensure that all transmission line designs adhere to industry codes, standards, and regulations, including NESC, IEEE, IEC, and regional grid codes.
  • Stay current with evolving industry standards and best practices, implementing innovations that enhance project delivery, safety, and reliability.
  • Provide technical support during the construction phase, including responding to queries, reviewing contractor submissions, and conducting site visits as needed.
  • Maintain regular attendance in accordance with the company's attendance policy and supervisory assignment.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by Management.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (or an acceptable combination of education and experience).
  • Minimum of 4 to 6 years of professional engineering experience in the power industry, specific to transmission line projects.
  • Strong knowledge of transmission engineering principles, with expertise in applicable codes, standards, and design tools (e.g., PLS‑CADD).
  • Ability to coordinate multiple technical disciplines, design teams, schedules, and budgets.
  • Assertive, able to cope with pressure, a team player.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and organization skills.
  • Preferred:
    Professional Engineering (PE) license.
