Position SummaryReporting to the Assistant Director of Health Information Management (Operations), the Coder II performs abstraction and coding of all outpatient visits, including emergency department, ambulatory surgery, and clinic encounters, at UCI Medical Center. Work is performed using the 3M encoder and SMS/Invision computer systems. Additional duties include preparing daily, weekly, and monthly production reports, participating in departmental continuous improvement projects, and performing related tasks as assigned to meet operational needs.
Responsibilities- Abstract clinical information and assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for all outpatient encounters.
- Prepare and compile daily, weekly, and monthly production reports.
- Participate in departmental performance improvement (PI) projects and related initiatives.
- Maintain high accuracy and coding quality in accordance with 3M encoder guidelines.
- Provide excellent customer service to clinicians and support staff.
- Completion of a twelve‑month AHIMA‑approved coding certificate program.
- Minimum two (2) years of acute hospital coding experience.
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease process, and medical terminology.
- Proficiency in ICD‑10, CPT, and HCPCS coding.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Credentialed as CCS, CCS‑P, CPC, or CPC‑H.
- Ability to work independently, self‑starter, and maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System.
- Knowledge of university and medical center organizations, policies, procedures, and forms.
