The Thesaurus Linguae Graecae Project (TLG) at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for a full-time Specialist appointment. The TLG Project is a premier digital library of Greek literature, maintaining one of the largest collections of electronic text in the world. For over five decades, the TLG has served as an essential resource for scholars, students, and researchers worldwide in the fields of Classics, Ancient History, Philosophy, and related disciplines.
We are seeking a talented Specialist with technical expertise to join our team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in advancing the TLG's mission by maintaining and enhancing our digital infrastructure and expanding our capabilities in text processing and data management. Responsibilities include maintaining and enhancing the online TLG platform; developing and implementing systems to process, store, and manage the TLG bibliographical, lexicographical, and textual data;
and maintaining database architectures for large‑scale textual data.
- Strong programming skills in relevant languages (e.g., Java, JavaScript)
- Demonstrated experience in web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript frameworks)
- Proficiency with database management systems (SQL, Postgres)
- Experience with version control systems (Git)
- Experience or conceptual knowledge of text encoding methods and standards (TEI, XML, Unicode)
- Familiarity with Classical languages (Ancient Greek and/or Latin) and familiarity with markup languages and natural language processing (NLP) tools and techniques will be a plus
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Specialist Appointees to the full Specialist rank should possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) in Computer Science, Information Science, Digital Humanities, or a related field, or ten or more years of experience demonstrating expertise in the relevant specialization. Specialists at full rank are normally expected to have a significant record of academic accomplishments, including contributions to published or in‑press research in the field, professional recognition, and a demonstrated record of university and/or public service.
