Overview
Complex Claims Consultant - Professional Liability (Real Estate) – This individual contributor position manages professional services claims with high complexity and exposure for real estate claims, under general direction and broad authority. Responsibilities include coordinating all claim resolution activities in accordance with company protocols, while achieving quality and customer service standards. Regular communication with customers and insureds may have regional, industry segment or company-wide scope of responsibility.
Ideal candidates are seasoned in professional liability claims handling with exceptional communication and negotiation skills, the ability to simplify complex legal and financial concepts, emotional maturity, calm under pressure, and strong relationship-building abilities. The role emphasizes a practical, business-focused approach to educating and guiding insureds toward cost-effective resolutions. This position offers a flexible, hybrid work schedule and is available in locations near a CNA office.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Manages an inventory of highly complex professional services claims with large exposures, verifying policy coverage, conducting investigations, developing and employing resolution strategies, and authorizing disbursements within authority limits.
- Ensures exceptional customer service by managing all aspects of the claim, interacting professionally, achieving quality and cycle time standards, providing timely updates, and responding promptly to inquiries.
- Verifies coverage and establishes reserves by reviewing policy language, partnering with coverage counsel on complex matters, estimating potential claim valuation, and following claim handling protocols.
- Leads focused investigations to determine compensability, liability and damages by gathering information, taking statements, and working with experts as necessary to verify facts.
- Resolves claims by collaborating with internal and external partners to develop and execute a claim resolution strategy, including reserves management, settlements, and authorizing payments within authority.
- Establishes and manages claim budgets by achieving timely resolution, overseeing resources, and delivering high quality service efficiently.
- Addresses subrogation/salvage opportunities or potential fraud by evaluating facts and referring to appropriate resources for investigation.
- Maintains quality standards by ensuring adherence to protocols, accurate and timely work, proper documentation, and timely resolution and payment of claims.
- Keeps senior leadership informed of significant risks and losses with loss summaries and concise reports for oversight.
- Maintains subject matter expertise and regulatory compliance by staying current on laws, regulations, and trends relevant to the line of business.
- Mentors and trains less experienced Claim Professionals.
- Thorough knowledge of the commercial insurance industry, products, policy language, coverage, and claim practices.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey business and technical information clearly.
- Analytical and investigative mindset with critical thinking to resolve complex problems.
- Strong work ethic, time management, and organizational skills; ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to negotiate complex settlements and interpret complex professional services policies and coverage.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment and proficiency with Microsoft Office and related software.
- Appreciation for diverse opinions and ideas.
- Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience.
- Typically a minimum of six years of relevant experience, preferably in professional liability claim handling.
- Must have or be able to obtain and maintain an Insurance Adjuster License within 90 days of hire, where applicable.
- Prior negotiation experience; professional designations (e.g., CPCU) preferred.
In certain jurisdictions CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of compensation for this role. The national base pay range for this job level in the District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Washington is $72,000 to $141,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on factors including experience, skills, certifications and location. CNA offers a comprehensive benefits package.
