Department of Surgery Your Role on the Team

The position of Nurse Practitioner I in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team‑oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients, primarily located at a new hospital in Irvine, California.

The surgical patients will include general surgery and specialty surgical services on all levels of care, including the intensive care unit. Inpatient surgical services include colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, vascular. Duties will include consults and inpatient care and management.

Duties include and are not limited to evaluating care, ordering diagnostics and creating a treatment plan. The nurse practitioner will participate with inpatient sign out/hand‑off at the beginning and end of shift. The nurse practitioner will round and communicate with the surgery teams/residents/attending physicians. The nurse practitioner will be responsible for surgical consultations on potential surgical patients. The nurse practitioner will be involved in resuscitations of surgical patients from the ED and ICU.

Responsibilities include coordination of procedures (including scheduling operations and other procedures, etc.) and follow‑up, admit and discharge patients (including admission H&P, orders, discharge summary, instructions, and medications) when appropriate. The nurse practitioner will triage phone calls from patients and nurses and be responsible for the reviewing critical labs, follow‑up of results with patients and medical staff, obtaining comprehensive medical histories, performing initial and daily physical examinations/assessments, and exploring patient’s health needs in a trauma‑informed manner.

The nurse practitioner will identify, treat, and manage hospitalized patients. The nurse practitioner should demonstrate an advanced level of medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional development and competency validation. The nurse practitioner will participate in the comprehensive care of patients in the inpatient settings and provide multidisciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians.

In addition, Nurse Practitioners with RNFA credentials may assist in the operating room, collaborating closely with surgeons and the surgical team to ensure high‑quality patient care throughout surgical procedures. This Nurse Practitioner I position is represented by the California Nurses Association (CNA) union.

Job Description for Nurse Practitioner I:

  • Advanced Practice Practitioners (APP) are required to be credentialed to practice and be privileged through Medical Staff to function in their clinical role. Credentialing and approval of privileges must be completed prior to the first working day.
  • The NP is accountable to, evaluated, and provided feedback by the supervising/collaborating physician, physician designee(s) in the same clinical specialty, or the Administrative Manager.
