The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) is housed under the Office of Research on the UCI Campus. The UCI ICTS is one of 62 Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSAs) funded by the National Institutes of Health in the US. The ICTS mission is to improve health and healthcare by catalyzing translational research across the spectrum and by advancing the science of translation.
To accomplish this mission, we provide a wide range of support services to researchers across the spectrum from basic research to population health research and everything in between. Our goal is simple: to accelerate discoveries from the lab and translate them into life-altering medical care and public health interventions. The Pilot Studies Unit manages an annual research award program that supports preliminary research conducted on campus.
Applications are invited annually to support innovative research that is "high-risk/high-reward", and the Pilot Studies Unit executes a rigorous review and selection process. After awards are given, the Pilot Studies Unit supports awardees in their execution of their research by connecting them with campus resources that may accelerate their progress. In addition to the ICTS Pilot Study Awards, this unit also manages the review process for other UCI entities that wish to invite and select pilot study projects in specific health topic areas.
