Role Summary

Regular software updates are at the core of RV Tech’s identity as a company that supports and improves its products long after the first sale, as well as core to how we develop and iterate within Rivian engineering. Our OTA Cloud team is therefore also at the core of this identity by developing and maintaining the full stack infrastructure required to enable hundreds of thousands of updates every day consistently and reliably.

As a Senior Backend Engineer on the OTA Cloud team, you will play a critical role in designing, developing, and scaling the backend systems that power our over-the-air (OTA) update capabilities. You will work on complex challenges related to distributed systems, high availability, and performance optimization, with a strong emphasis on leveraging AWS architecture.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable, reliable, and efficient backend systems for OTA updates.
  • Architect and implement solutions using AWS services, including but not limited to EC2, S3, Lambda, Dynamo

    DB, and RDS.
  • Optimize system performance and ensure high availability, scalability, and security.
  • Develop and maintain RESTful APIs, Graph

    QL endpoints, and microservices.
  • Implement robust monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to deliver high‑quality software.
  • Write clean, well‑documented, and testable code.
  • Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers.
  • Stay up‑to‑date with the latest industry trends and technologies.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues.
  • Contribute to the improvement of software development processes and best practices.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in backend software development.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one of the following backend programming languages:
    Java, Python, or Go.
  • Extensive experience with AWS services and architecture, including hands‑on experience with designing and deploying applications on AWS.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, microservices architecture, and RESTful API design.
  • Experience with database systems, both relational (e.g., Postgre

    SQL, MySQL) and No

    SQL (e.g., Dynamo

    DB, Mongo

    DB).
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience with monitoring tools such as Datadog.
  • Strong understanding of software development principles, design patterns, and best practices.
  • Excellent problem‑solving, debugging, and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • AWS certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified Developer).
  • Experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) tools (e.g., Terraform, Cloud Formation).
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and Dev Ops practices.
  • Experience with performance testing and optimization.
  • Familiarity with OTA update systems or embedded systems.
Pay Disclosure

Salary Range for Palo Alto Based Applicants: $146,900 - $183,600 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).

Salary Range/Hourly Rate for Irvine Based Applicants: $135,100 - $168,900 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
