Job Description - SPED Self Contained Classroom Teacher Assistant (Grades: K-5) (RTP)

Position Overview

The SPED Self Contained Classroom Teacher Assistant supports classroom activities and student needs in grades K-5. Responsibilities include preparing instructional materials, maintaining classroom order, assisting students with physical disabilities, and supporting behavioral and educational goals.

Responsibilities

  • Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly classroom and prepare the environment according to student needs.
  • Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare reports.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Assist students with physical disabilities, including transferring, lifting, or positioning.
  • Support students with personal care needs, including feeding, bathroom, and hygiene assistance.
  • Assist with classroom curriculum implementation.
  • Manage student behavior, intervene in crises, and restrain disruptive behavior as needed.
  • Adapt to each student's medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Work with students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises.
  • Supervise students throughout the school day, including lunch, bus, and playground duties.
  • Inform the teacher of any special needs or issues of individual students.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Participate in staff development, faculty meetings, and school events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Work Environment

    The noise level is usually moderate. Travel across the district is required. On-campus work is essential; remote work is not an option.

    Qualifications

    • High School Diploma or equivalent, plus one of the following:
      Associate degree, 48 college credits, or passing an academic assessment.
    • Paraprofessional certificate from the State Board of Certification.
    • Training for teacher assistants or relevant work experience preferred.
    • Knowledge of child development and behavior characteristics.
    • Ability to work with diverse ethnic groups.
    • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively.
    • Experience working with children with disabilities.
    • Flexibility and willingness to stay current professionally.

    Regular and punctual attendance is required.
