This position is eligible for a Chapter 21 contract.
Primary PurposeItinerant Teachers specialize in education, communication, and auditory skills development of deaf and hard of hearing individuals, from birth to 21 years old. Services are provided in various settings, including school, home, or alternative environments. They also collaborate with families and educational teams to ensure student success.
Qualifications Education/Certification- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
- Valid Texas teaching certificate with deaf education endorsements
- Passing score for the TASC sign proficiency test or equivalent skills
- Understanding of deafness and its impact on child development
- Knowledge of IEP processes and ECI/IFSP procedures
- Consultation and collaboration skills
- Knowledge of assistive technology (FM systems, cochlear implants, hearing aids)
- Ability to interpret testing results and communication assessments
- Proficiency in sign systems such as ASL and SEE
- Experience working with families and children with sensory impairments or multiple disabilities
- Successful teaching or student teaching experience in deaf education
- Effective instructional strategies and understanding of diverse learning styles
- Computer and technology skills related to instruction
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
At least 5 years as a deaf education teacher and/or parent advisor preferred.
Major Responsibilities and Duties- Collaborate with families and providers to deliver quality instruction to students with hearing impairments.
- Coordinate with ECI providers for services and assessments.
- Utilize knowledge of infant/toddler development to support families and early learning environments.
- Develop and implement instructional strategies tailored to individual student needs.
- Attend training sessions to stay current on laws and techniques related to deaf/hard of hearing students.
- Participate in IFSP meetings and assist with evaluations.
- Help families understand their child's sensory impairments and developmental impacts.
- Coordinate with agencies and therapists, attending relevant meetings.
- Prepare weekly lesson plans and maintain confidentiality and records.
- Complete required paperwork promptly and maintain files.
- Report to work regularly as scheduled.
- Attend Admission Review and Dismissal Meetings.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Travel required.
Mental Demands: Ability to communicate effectively, instruct, and maintain emotional control under stress.
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Frequent standing, stooping, kneeling, heavy lifting, and exposure to bacteria and potentially violent students.
