Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a strategic leadership position responsible for the fiscal integrity, financial planning, and overall fiscal management of the Circle Ten Council. Reporting directly to the Scout Executive/CEO, the CFO oversees accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, audits, payroll, tax compliance, and financial forecasting. This executive ensures sound fiscal stewardship, regulatory compliance, and strategic alignment with the council’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Governance

• Serve as a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, contributing to strategic planning, goal-setting, and cross-departmental initiatives.
• Function as staff liaison for the Budget Committee and Audit Committee; present financial reports and insights to the Executive Board and stakeholders.
• Provide strategic financial input on long-term plans, new initiatives, and partnerships.
• Direct all financial functions including budgeting, accounting, financial reporting, cash management, and forecasting.
• Develop and check key performance indicators and dashboards for internal and board reporting.
• Lead the council’s annual budgeting process; manage financial models for multi-year forecasting.
• Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements with variance analysis to support decision-making.
• Maintain and enhance a robust system of internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP.

Audit, Compliance, & Tax

• Lead the preparation and execution of the annual external audit and ensure prompt resolution of findings.
• Oversee the preparation and filing of IRS Form 990 and other tax filings.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws, grant regulations, and donor restrictions.
• Manage federal and state funding contracts including grant compliance and fiscal reporting.

Team Development & Operations

• Supervise and support the accounting team, promoting continuous learning and operational excellence.
• Review and manage payroll operations, 403(b) contributions, and benefit reconciliations.
• Train and support field and program staff, including seasonal camp business managers, on financial procedures.

Technology & Process Improvement

• Optimize accounting and finance systems to improve reporting, efficiency, and compliance.
• Lead the selection and implementation of financial systems and tools.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field required; master’s degree preferred.
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
• Minimum 10 years of progressive fiscal management experience, including 5+ years in a senior leadership role.
• Nonprofit experience preferred, especially with federal/state grants and fund accounting.
• Experience managing audits, budget development, and IRS compliance for nonprofit organizations.
• Strong technology proficiency including accounting software and payroll systems (e.g., ADP Workforce Now).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present financial concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
• Proven leadership, supervisory, and team development skills.

Compensation and Benefits:

The Circle Ten Council offers a competitive package of benefits to team members. The benefits offered are among the best in the nonprofit sector. The package includes major medical, dental, vision, and prescription coverage in addition to long-term disability, accident, and life insurance. The starting salary for a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is $125,000 per year. Final compensation will be commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications.
