Sterile Processing Tech at Baylor Scott & White Surgical Hospital Las Colinas
- The Sterile Processing Technician cares for and maintains all surgical instrumentation.
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent
- License: CRCST through IAHCSMM/HSPA (1-year) required, must be obtained within 6 months of hire. BLS preferred.
- Required Experience: 2-3 years’ experience as Instrument Room Technician or internally trained new grad with certification within 6 months of position change. Experience with cleaning and sterilizing instruments following IFU, AAMI standards, policies and procedures; decontaminating instruments using detergents, disinfectants, and lubricants; identifying instruments by description or specialty; and following IFU and policies for cleaning, assembling, sterilizing and storing instruments.
Skills and Abilities
- Works independently; requires minimal supervision.
- Communicates and works effectively with personnel, physicians, hospital departments, and outside vendors.
- Understands infection control related to decontamination and sterilization of instruments.
- Demonstrates understanding of flow from decontamination area to the clean processing area.
- Operates equipment (e.g., ultrasonic machine, automated washers, cart washers, sterilizers) per IFU and understands washer, biological and Bowie Dick tests run daily.
- Maintains documentation for sterilizers and Immediate Use Sterilizers.
- Follows manufacturers IFU’s when processing all instrument trays, including Vendor Trays.
- Verifies cycle parameters and maintains documentation per AAMI and hospital policies.
- Reads sterilizer printouts and demonstrates dependability and accountability.
- Utilizes appropriate PPE while decontaminating dirty surgical instruments with disinfectants as recommended by the instrument IFU.
- Maintains and inspects instrumentation, ensuring bio burden is removed and functionality is intact per IFU.
- Sterilizes all instrumentation using steam and hydrogen peroxide methods as stated in instrument IFU.
- Maintains operational supply inventory and implants as necessary for the smooth functioning of the instrument room.
- Maintains a log for each autoclave and Sterrad load; records consist of instruments processed.
