SummaryThis position will be 100% onsite at our corporate office in Irving, TX.
The Lead Counsel, Employment, provides comprehensive legal counsel and direction to the company's Human Resource Department on employment law issues, benefits, immigration, compliance, litigation, safety, and related matters for the U.S. and Canada. The Lead Counsel serves as a trusted advisor to executive leadership, providing business‑oriented legal advice as it relates to employment matters and broader business objectives.
- Provide legal advice and support for employment‑related matters, including employment law, benefits, employee safety, and immigration.
- Interact with cross‑functional team members and executive‑level management regarding employment‑related matters.
- Deliver business‑oriented legal professional advice.
- Assess risk and deliver proactive and practical advice to protect the brand and the organization.
- Work efficiently and effectively to manage diverse docket of issues and matters.
- Manage in‑house paralegal and a tightly knit network of external counsel handling a wide‑range of employment‑related issues, including demand letters, litigation, and administrative agency actions.
- Cross‑functional collaboration with other company resources in conjunction with outside counsel, as needed, to ensure delivery of effective, efficient advice consistent with corporate objectives.
- Develop, manage, and deliver results through KPIs and a thorough understanding of the company's business and customers.
- Proactively identify employment trends and formulate appropriate strategies.
- Respond and resolve administrative charges, wage claims, and demand letters under favorable terms.
- Proactively monitor applicable foreign, federal, state, and local updates, and maintain knowledge of current employment law policies and best practices; update policies as needed.
- Train internal clients on both emerging and existing legal principles and corporate policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate high ethical standards and approach to doing business, setting that tone for the organization.
- JD and bachelor's degrees
- 10+, including 3+ years of in‑house employment law experience
- Licensed attorney in good standing in applicable U.S. jurisdiction(s)
- Good working knowledge and understanding of general employment law
- Strong organizational skills to prioritize and manage multiple time‑sensitive projects simultaneously with high attention to detail and accuracy
- Interest in learning SEI’s business to deliver both practical and immediately actionable legal advice.
- Ability to listen and understand the needs of the business, integrate legal and business issues, and partner with business leaders
- Highly effective negotiation skills with excellent oral and written communication abilities
- Strong presentation skills for delivering training and information to various audiences
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with a solid reputation for delivering results
- Comprehensive knowledge of Canadian, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations
- Excellent legal research, analysis, and writing skills
- Ability to quickly assess situations and empower internal clients to make decisions
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
