Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Commissioning Technician / Field Service Technician (Military Veterans)

I am a recruiter at Orion Talent, a veteran-run firm that has placed military veterans into civilian careers for over 30 years. I work with several companies in the data center and critical power industry that hire veterans first for commissioning and field service work. Navy technical rates are their top target, and Navy Nuclear veterans are the best fit we have found.

One client told me about 90 percent of their commissioning team is former Navy nuke.

What you would be doing

Startup and functional testing of the systems that keep data centers running: generators, UPS, ATS, PDUs, transformers, switch gear, chillers, pumps, and building automation. Inspecting equipment installs, writing test procedures, troubleshooting, and signing off that the plant is ready to go live. Some roles lean electrical (switch gear and relay testing through 15 kV class), some lean mechanical (chillers, pumps, cooling), and some cover both.

If you have ever done a plant startup, run a qual card, or written a procedure someone else had to execute, you already understand the job.

The setup
  • Home-based. Fly out to the project, fly home. Most schedules are Monday through Friday with weekends home, or two weeks on site and one week home, depending on the client
  • Travel is paid, and you keep the points
  • W2, full benefits, PTO, 401k
  • Qualification-based training programs, several modeled directly on Navy qual cards. Raises and bonuses tied to quals and projects
  • Pay typically $70K to $90K to start, with paths above $100K and into program lead roles
  • Certification support (PMP, CCM) on some roles
Who fits
  • Navy Nuclear: EM, ET, MM, sub or surface. Strongest fit for every one of these roles
  • Navy conventional technical rates: EM, EN, GSM, GSE, MM, ET, IC, FC, HT, and similar
  • Other branches welcome:
    Army 12P, 91D, 15 series;
    Air Force 3E0, 3E1, 2A series;
    Marine 1141, 1142, 1161;
    Coast Guard EM, MK, ET
  • Separating within 6 months, or already out
  • Comfortable with heavy travel for the first few years
  • Live within about an hour of a major airport, or willing to relocate (relocation assistance on some roles)
  • Clean background and driving record, able to lift 50 lbs
