Travel Requirements:

This position requires routine and extensive travel across the following states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Periodic travel along the Northeastern coast may also be required. Candidates must be willing and able to travel frequently, including overnight stays, in alignment with project schedules and business needs.

Job Summary:

The Observer will perform observation for activities around live railroad tracks and are responsible for job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication and ensuring all work being conducted is being done so in a manner that will not foul or effect the tracks in anyway.

This position involves extensive travel throughout multiple states to support field operations and project assignments. Candidates must be adaptable to changing work environments and schedules while maintaining a strong commitment to safety and operational excellence.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provide the required jobsite protection on each assignment, error free and consistent with the rules; including but not limited to radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers
  • Perform daily job briefings with all personnel on-site, ensuring compliance with railroad safety requirements
  • Prepare and submit required electronic forms, including but not limited to: job set-up forms for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other reports as required
  • Actively participate in routine reoccurring safety classes and qualification training
  • Maintain high levels of communication with the RWIC supervisors and managers regarding various assignments and schedules
  • Ensure all work is conducted out of the foul of the tracks
  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and respectful workplace culture, free from behaviors that undermine morale, productivity, or organizational values
  • Uphold the organization's standards of integrity, accountability, and respect in all duties and interactions
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations
  • Other duties assigned or required to meet their business needs
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Ability to meet required physical demands and complete necessary tasks.
  • Ability to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains.
  • Understanding of On-Track Safety training and qualifications required for protected roadway workers.
  • Proficiency in radio communication procedures between RWIC/EICs (Employees in Charge) and assigned work group.
  • Capability to conduct job briefings with all roadway workers at their location.
  • Ability to place railroad advance warning and stop signs.
  • Skill in installing railroad derails and applying locking devices.
  • Proficiency with electronic communications, including email and text, and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
Required Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • A minimum of 5 years in railroad maintenance of way (MOW) experience, within a Class I or Class II freight railroad.
