The Court Usher is the first point of contact for all court users during hearings. You will work closely with the judiciary and administrative staff to ensure the smooth flow of court work. You will meet members of the public, legal representatives, prepare hearing rooms, complete documentation and support HMCTS clerical work.
Key Responsibilities- Administration: collecting and delivering files and bundles to the judiciary, supporting colleagues outside court times, general clerical work, use of computers and switchboard, filing forms, recording equipment maintenance, sorting hearing lists, correspondence, drafting acknowledgements, court orders, warrants.
- Post Handling: opening, sorting, distributing and dispatching post, collecting and delivering post, monitoring stock, supplying court rooms with stationery.
- Data Entry and Recording: checking accuracy against guidelines, handling money and petty cash.
- Operating Equipment: managing court and office equipment such as computers, fax machines, scanners, photocopiers, switchboards, franking machines, messaging, tape and video recorders.
- Handling Telephone Calls: answering enquiries and passing messages.
- Arranging Meetings: preparing rooms for hearings, tribunals, trials, meetings and clearing rooms at the end of the day.
- Using Electronic Diaries: receiving parties to court and providing information related to proceedings, escorting court users, swearing oaths, calling people into court in priority order, liaising with Witness Service.
- Other Duties: working flexibly and undertaking any other duties reasonably requested by line management.
2 GCSE’s at Grade C or above, or equivalent qualifications, or experience working with the public in a busy public service environment. Ability to use a computer at the required level.
