Overview

The Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional functions as a member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team providing a range of professional treatment services to mentally ill and/or mentally disabled prisoners within the Michigan Department of Corrections. They work with hospitalized, medically ill and other special populations. The Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional is responsible for all aspects of the mental health evaluation, referral to the appropriate mental health level of care and treatment of the prisoners, monitoring their progress and ensuring continuity of care is not jeopardized.

The Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional provides a full range of psychosocial assessments and evaluations, interventions, consultations and referral services as assigned by the supervisor. They assist with placement and obtaining services when the prisoner discharges to the community.

Responsibilities
  • Provide mental health evaluations and treatment coordination for prisoners with serious mental illness or developmental disabilities.
  • Perform psychosocial assessments, interventions, consultations and referrals as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Help with placement planning and continuity of care upon prisoner discharge to the community.
Education

Possession of a master's degree with a major in psychology, social work, or counseling.

Experience

Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional 9
No specific type or amount is required.

Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional 10
One year of professional experience providing QMHP services equivalent to a Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional 9.

Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional P11
Two years of professional experience providing QMHP services equivalent to a Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional, including one year equivalent to a Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional 10.

Additional Requirements and Information

Possession of a Michigan license to practice the applicable Qualified Mental Health Profession, which is required to practice as a psychologist, social worker, counselor, registered nurse, or other QMHP. Positions in this class are test-designated and subject to pre-appointment, random-selection, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of mental health counseling, individual and group therapy and psycho educational treatments.
  • Knowledge of mental health assessments and interpretation of such assessments based on scope of license and training.
  • Knowledge of crisis evaluation and intervention. Knowledge of treatment plan development and implementation.
  • Knowledge of human, emotional, social, psychological and environmental problems and techniques to alleviate them.
  • Knowledge of comorbid substance abuse and mental illness diagnosis and treatment.
  • Knowledge of techniques for observing and assessing behavior.
  • Knowledge of the basic mental health professional discipline, principles, and practice.
  • Knowledge of the characteristics and aspects of mental and emotional disturbances and developmental disability.
  • Knowledge of patient rights and the ability to apply treatment methods within the scope of practice.
  • Ability to work with other professional disciplines and to communicate effectively, including organizing, evaluating and presenting information, both verbally and in writing, and to speak before groups, including providing testimony in court and administrative hearings.
  • Ability to develop a therapeutic relationship with patients and to maintain records, and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work.
