MDOC Health Information Manager independently manages the health information (medical record) services for the Health Care Unit. This position is responsible for managing and securing patient records, ensuring compliance with federal mandates for electronic storage of patient information, and creating, maintaining, storing, and releasing all health records within the facility. The role also assists with Quality Improvement audits, data entry, training, and assisting employees in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
Direct supervision is provided by the Health Information Manager Supervisor, with programmatic direction by the Health Information Compliance Coordinator from the Bureau of Health Care Services.
- Independently manage health information services for the Health Care Unit, including creation, maintenance, storage, and release of health records.
- Secure patient records and ensure compliance with federal mandates for electronic storage of patient information.
- Assist with Quality Improvement audits, data entry, training, and support for staff using the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Receive direct supervision from the Health Information Manager Supervisor and programmatic direction from the Health Information Compliance Coordinator.
- Education: Possession of an associate degree in health information or medical record technology.
- Experience: Medical Record Examiner 8 — No specific type or amount required;
Medical Record Examiner 9 — One year of experience equivalent to Medical Record Examiner 8;
Medical Record Examiner E10 — Two years of experience equivalent to Medical Record Examiner, including one year equivalent to Medical Record Examiner 9. - Certification: Certification by the American Health Information Management Association as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
- The Department of Corrections will not hire individuals who have been convicted of a felony or who have felony charges pending, in accordance with Public Act 140 of 1996.
- Applicants will be screened in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017 and must meet ethical standards; all employees must report possible conflicts of interest.
- New hires and returning MDOC employees may be required to complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) of 40 or 80 hours, followed by additional online training.
